BATON ROUGE REGION
Louisiana Technology Park (LTP) is a technology-focused incubator established in a partnership with the State of Louisiana to grow early-stage Internet and high-tech companies and assist them in growing sustainable, profitable ventures. Incubator members build their business with support from experienced entrepreneurs, professional staff, investor support, and a network of strategic partners (local, regional, and national companies providing professional services at reduced rates). The incubator's comprehensive business services include a Tier IV state-of-the-art data center, Internet connectivity, Class A office space, 24/7 secured access, advanced phone, and communication equipment, receptionist support as well as training, mentoring, and consulting, all for between $10 - $13/ft2.
LTP serves as a hub for research and business development, working on area and statewide initiatives to assist entrepreneurs, investors, and the business community. Eighty-nine percent of LTP's incubator companies are still in business today, which is two percent above the national average. Currently, LTP houses 13 companies with a combined total of 83 employees, $4,570,855 in salaries, $31,281,405 in sales, and $17.5 million in venture capital and angel investment. According to noted economist Dr. James Richardson, Alumni Professor of Economics at Louisiana State University, the overall impact of LTP start-up companies has produced multiplier effects throughout Baton Rouge and the state, including $94.8 million in additional business transactions, $23.6 million in additional household earnings, and 626 new jobs. The direct and indirect economic impact has returned $9 for every dollar invested.
LAFAYETTE REGION
Lafayette Utilities System (LUS), a publically-owned utility serving the city of Lafayette, began construction of one of the nation's largest municipal Fiber-To-The-Home and Business networks in 2008. Construction of the system is projected to be complete by 2010 with 83,500 glass miles deployed. TV, Internet, and Phone services will be rolled out to customers as areas of the network are completed.
In January 2009, LUS Fiber served its first customers. Product offerings include unique features such as a TV Web Portal, which allows customers to connect to the Internet through their TV, and a 100 Mbps Peer-to-Peer Intranet, which allows customers to communicate and share files with each other at extreme speeds. Also, regardless of a customer's purchased capacity, any communication between two devices on LUS's network can burst up to the full 100 Mbps capacity. With these unique features and a 100% fiber optic network, LUS Fiber is delivering the future of technology to the city of Lafayette.
